The Hazelnut: A Treasure of the Langhe
The hazelnut is a precious fruit with a delightful flavor, born and grown among the gentle hills of the Langhe, in a land known for its exceptional products: Piedmont.
Its history in the world of confectionery dates back to Carnival in 1865, when Turin pastry chefs used it to create the legendary Gianduiotti chocolates and Gianduia cream. Since then, the hazelnut, particularly the Tonda Gentile delle Langhe variety, has become a true legend. It was the first product from the region to obtain IGP (Protected Geographical Indication) status and is now recognized and appreciated worldwide as the "World Queen of Hazelnuts."
Nutritional Qualities of the Hazelnut
From a nutritional standpoint, the hazelnut is one of the seeds richest in oily substances, containing about 61% fats, of which oleic acid makes up 82.7%. The fats in the hazelnut are primarily monounsaturated (similar to those in extra virgin olive oil) and are known for their beneficial effects on health, protecting cell membranes.
Rich in proteins (14%), low in carbohydrates (6%), and cholesterol-free, the hazelnut is a valuable source of vitamins E, A, and C, as well as essential minerals like iron, magnesium, phosphorus, and calcium. Its fiber content makes it an ideal food for those seeking a healthy and balanced diet.
Its nutritional richness makes it particularly recommended for children, athletes, pregnant or breastfeeding women, and those engaging in physical activity.
